SOLOMON'S GREATEST SONG
BY: ROCHELLE HEILBRUN
My favorite book of the Bible is Song of Solomon. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Oh, great! She’s going to talk about sex!” Although Song of Solomon is definitely laced with a ton of risqué language, that’s not why I love the book so much. When I read this poetic book of the Bible, all I can think about is just how much Jesus is in love with me - His creation!
A lot of people don’t know that when I was in Bible college, I broke a rule by going and getting a tattoo with some friends. The tattoo says “jealously loved” in Hebrew and it’s taken from Song of Solomon 8:6-7, which says, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave. Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame. Many waters cannot quench love, nor can rivers drown it….”
I chose this particular verse because it speaks to me of the deepest kind of love – a love that is so deep, it’s labeled “jealous.” Jesus loves us so much that He died on a cross. This symbol of His love, the cross, is a public proclamation to all mankind. Jesus is calling out to us continually, saying, “My beloved ones! Look My way! See, I have placed you as a seal on my heart, on my arm. I unashamedly love you! My love is so great for you that nothing and no one can quench it.”
Song of Solomon 4:9 tells us even more of His great love for us. It says, “You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.” Can you believe that? He’s saying that when we even glance His way, He is overwhelmed. This is unfathomable!
Each day is another opportunity to take time to love Him. So many times, we want a microwave relationship with God, but I urge you, don’t rush the time it takes to trust. Don’t rush the time it takes to love. The journey of love is the best part of love. I often times ask the Holy Spirit to teach me how to love Him. I ask this because in my own depravity, I can’t possibly love Him without His help. And the best part is that He wants to help me! He teaches me daily how to love Him and He can teach you, too. All you have to do is ask!
