FASTING AS A FAMILY
Proverbs 22:6, "Start children off on the way that they should go, and even when they are old they will not depart from it."
We fast as a family every year because there is no better time to teach our kids how to fast than now.
Every year the 21 Day Fast is a family event for us. We put away all screens, sugary treats, and amp up the prayer, worship, and Bible time. In addition to this, we ask our kids to seek the Lord in what they are to fast. Every year they rise to the challenge!
We have watched our kids grow in prayer and fasting throughout the years.
We’ve watched our 5-year-old, with zealous ambition, tell us they’re "going to fast everything" (then turn around and sneak some candy) grow into a place where they hear from the Lord on what to fast, make a commitment, and stick with it!
If we want our children to fast and pray as adults, we need to train them to fast and pray now. Studies show that a person's worldview and moral values are shaped by age 13. Who they are at age 13 is a picture of who they will be as an adult.
We aren’t just preparing our children to be good Christians when they grow up. If they’re born again, their spirits are alive to God right now! Include your children in your devotionals. Have conversations about what the Lord is doing in their hearts and speaking to them about during the fast. Be a part of what God is doing in their lives and hearts and be blessed!
