Keep Pressing On
In the month of January, there are many churches across our nation and around the world who fast. Recently on one of pages I am apart of on Facebook, a discussion was started about fasting and why so many people fast in January. Throughout this conversation, one individual said something that stuck out to me and broke my heart. This person said, “I don't fast. I don't encourage people to do it. I don't participate in it corporately.” Later he stated, “I have never experienced any specific benefit from fasting. The most it does is make me hungry.”
I read that and my jaw dropped. It is easy for me to see that this individual has a skewed view of fasting or has been fasting without doing any additional prayer. Fasting without prayer is ineffective, and will only leave you hungry, both physically and spiritually. Often times, when we want extreme results, we have to do extreme things. You can see it all over society. People play insane game shows to gain fame or wealth. There are hundreds of different diets that promise extreme results. There are utterly difficult workout plans that produce an extreme result. If the world understands that extreme equals extreme, how much more should the church understand that?
Fasting isn’t going on a hunger strike. Fasting isn’t a quick way to drop those holiday pounds. Fasting is a way to deepen our relationship and intimacy with God. Fasting is a way to show our dedication to the things we want to see happen in our lives! By now, you should have your list of the reasons you are fasting. Keep that list in the forefront of my mind, maybe even place it somewhere that is easily seen throughout your day. There is a great benefit from fasting! God always reveals Himself when we seek Him.
Matthew 7:7-8 (ESV) - “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Press on! Fight your flesh, and feed your spirit! YOU GOT THIS!
