WELCOME TO THE 21 DAY FAST || DAY 17 : JAN. 20, 2016
Hey New Life Family, yeah I said family. The fast is getting close to reaching its finale and we are getting excited. We...my church family and my family at home. We’re in this together. I think that’s one of the big reasons why fasting is made just a bit easier, we’re in this together. When Jennifer and I first talked with our kids about the fast we got some pretty big eye rolls and sighs. So Jennifer had to tell me I couldn’t react that way in front of the children. JK. It’s been so worth it though. It’s been such a great time to see our kids connect to Jesus. It hasn’t been all sunshine and unicorns though, it’s been tough. Any person with kids can relate.
One of the most memorable moments happened recently. We hide candy. Mostly for Jennifer and I to consume without little puppy dog eyes wanting some, but also so those little bundles don’t consume pounds of candy in one sitting (Thank you Halloween). Well our hiding spot was discovered. Dun Dun DUNNNNN. All but one of our children enjoyed the seemingly endless bounty of chocolate covered manna from heaven...I mean candy. This would have been a really good moment to crush some little dreams about candy after the fast and make them feel super guilty about doing something they weren’t supposed to, but I just didn’t feel that this was the approach we were supposed to have. We sat down and talked. We talked about why we fast, the importance of fasting, and why Jesus is so important to us that we would do such a painful thing to ourselves. You know what I saw in those little eyes, remorse. Not remorse because they couldn’t re-hide the candy and couldn’t unpack their mouths, but remorse because they love Jesus and want to please him. They got it. They are beginning to understand the importance of serving Jesus especially when it’s not comfortable.
Fasting is an act of sacrifice that moves us into the realm of faith. It’s so encouraging to see our children learning that same lesson. After all, we’re in this together.
Check out Matthew 6:16-17 to see what Jesus said about fasting.
