We Were Made to Connect!
By: Pastor Josh Heilbrun // Jamestown Campus Pastor
We are enjoying a series called “Connect” for the next few weeks! Whenever you think of connecting you think of linking, joining together, and something/one being related. Each week of this series we are desiring to connect you back to the vision of New Life. The vision is: Encounter God, Empower People, Enjoy Life, Exist for Others.
The beautiful thing is that these statements all came from the mind of God: The Bible. These were God’s ideas the whole time- starting with Him and ending with serving others. Let me rephrase to help bring understanding: Know God, Find Freedom, Discover your Purpose, and Make a Difference. We're going to examine one passage of scripture so that you can know these were always God’s ideas for us.
“Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt,” Exodus 6:6-7, 6.
What do we see here? The Lord makes these claims of what He is going to do in four statements starting with “I will.” Here they are: "I will bring you out of, I will free you (help people settle yesterday), I will redeem you (put you back to your original intended purpose), and I will take you as my own."
The first “I will” is us Encountering God. Earlier in chapter three of Exodus, Moses encounters God through a burning bush. God later sent Moses out so the nation could Encounter Him through signs, wonders, and miracles. You can see this happen on Sunday mornings and during prayer services. God shows up! We need His presence and power otherwise we are lost without Him!
The second “I will” is an empowering statement. God says, "I will deliver you from bondage and slavery; help you get past your past." This happens through relationship like in small groups. James shares that we find healing when we confess our sins to one another (James 5). The Lord wants you FREE!! He wants to remove you from bondage and slavery (Egypt) and get the mindset of Egypt out of you! He does this through the body of Christ like in Acts 2.
The third “I will” is God saying He wants to redeem us. He wants to show us what the best version of ourselves truly is. We find GREAT joy when we discover what God’s original, intended purpose is for us. Have you ever asked, “Why on Earth am I here?” Have you ever thought about asking the One who made you perfectly and uniquely why He made you with certain talents, gifts, interests, and personality? This is why we have Growth Track.
The last “I will” is God calling you His own but not just for self-enjoyment. The Lord did all that for the nation of Israel, and for YOU to see, that it was to bring Him glory and for us to exist for others! We are children of God when we confess Jesus as Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9) and made His kids (John 1:12). We accomplish this by doing all sorts of personal and community wide outreach to those around us.
We were made to connect in relationship to God, to be empowered to live a life in freedom in Jesus name, to know how God originally designed us to be, and for us to live not for our own benefit but for the benefit of others! Once we connect to God’s vision for our lives it will become a unending source of joy no matter any circumstance!!!
For Personal Study
Here are a few more examples where you can find these four simple things (Know God, Find Freedom, Discover your Purpose, and Make a Difference): Isaiah 61:1-4, Colossians 1:28, and Ephesians 1:16-18.
May God richly bless you, my friend!
