Commanding My Soul to Rejoice Even in Difficult Times

It seems that in this time of uncertainty and decisions, many people appear to be battling with all kinds of ongoing anxiety and/or depression. Whenever we are walking through an especially challenging trial, there is a temptation to start to feel a little blue or melancholy. Whenever we are going through circumstances that are intense and uncertain, there is this bait to lose my emotional “oompf” and not really give my best to anything or anyone. Often this because we are distracted by cares, concerns, and “what ifs.”

Our emotions tell us to be tired, subdued, and serious. In the realm of emotions and feelings, all we want to do is crawl back into bed and lay there worrying about things. But often, the simple, straightforward conviction of the Holy Spirit will give us a check in our hearts and minds. He whispers that our fretting and worrying is a LACK of faith. That He has given us EVERYTHING we need to rise up and live triumphantly and victoriously, even right in THIS moment. You can command your emotions to align with God’s Word. Chose faith instead of fear!

It is often quite astounding to see the results of assertive, vocal spiritual action. It gives you energy, grace, and strength- that “oompf” to turn our feelings outward, to laugh, to serve, to minister to the needs of people around us. Maybe nothing has immediately changed about the trial or situation you are going through. But here is the GOOD news! Jesus has rescued you from sin and death, and we are His for all eternity. He will never leave you or forsake you! What other reason do we need to sing, dance, and leap for joy? To delight in simple pleasures? To joyfully serve and minister to the needs of others?

We can live an excellent life, no matter what cares and concerns we are carrying; no matter how melancholy our emotions feel- simply by choosing faith, choosing joy, and choosing to walk in Heavenly reality! In Christ, there is never a reason to give way to depression or despair. But there is EVERY reason to rejoice and be glad! This is our best tool- along with consistent prayer in the Holy Spirit. It is our secret weapon- not in MY own strength, but His!

"In that day they will say, 'Surely this is our God; we trusted in Him, and He saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation,'" Isaiah 25:9 (NIV).
