Family Advent Devotional - Week 1

Throughout the Bible, God promised The Advent or coming of His son, Jesus. This is one of the most important events in all of human history – the Almighty, eternal Creator of the universe becoming human, living among us, and suffering on our behalf in order to give us life.

The Old Testament looked expectantly for the advent of God’s forever King, the Anointed One who would bring peace to His people. Isaiah 9:6 anticipates and declares, “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Might God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” In Luke 2:8-11, when the long-awaited Messiah finally came, angels announced His birth by declaring, “I bring you good tidings of great joy with will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

For centuries, Christians around the world have used the four weeks leading up to Christmas to prepare themselves for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. It’s a time when we observe His first coming and we also look forward to His second coming. Each of the four weeks leading up to Advent we will focus on peace, hope, joy and love.

Each week there will be a video to watch about each one of the themes. You can find these videos on our blog, on our website, or by clicking here. Monday to Friday there will be a short scripture reading with a few discussion questions to review as a family. The video for each week can be watched whenever is convenient. This is only a resource and guide, so you are free to make changes to as you see fit.

You can also include reading Matthew (chapters 1-2) and Luke (chapter 2) as these Scriptures make up the “Christmas story.”

Our hope and desire is that you and your family gain an understanding what a miraculous and important event Jesus’ birth was. I also hope that you grow in your understanding of peace, hope, joy and love.

Biblical peace means to make complete or to restore to a state of wholeness. The Advent of Jesus is the arrival of peace. He not only makes peace with God for us, but He became our peace. Through the Advent of Jesus, not only are we no longer in conflict with God, but much more God has restored us to a state of wholeness.
