DAY 15 | 21 Day Fast | God is a Rewarder

While doing youth ministry one of the highlights every year was the New Year’s Eve party. Partly because of the food and company, but mostly because of our annual game of Sardines- a game where one person hides and the others search for them. When they find the one hiding, they hide with them. Pretty soon there’s a big group of people sitting in one location. You were rewarded by either being the first one to find the one hiding or never being found when you were hiding. I remember one time being first to discover the one hiding because when I was close by when they “cut the cheese.” I laughed, then hid with them once the air cleared.

There was a reward for seeking and finding. The kingdom of God functions much they same way. Hebrews 11:6 says, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." This passage says God rewards those who seek Him. When you put God first and make pleasing Him your highest priority you can expect to live a blessed, fulfilled, rewarded life. Notice though who God rewards - “those who earnestly seek Him.” Not those who half heartedly seek Him or those who only go to God when they need something, but those who quickly obey what the Lord reveals is His priority.

The problem comes when I seek the reward above the rewarder. When the lure of money, fame, fortune, bigger this or bigger that becomes the priority, life is very shallow, always looking for the next thing. However, when our attitude is to please God and seek Him first our life becomes fulfilled, blessed, and rewarded.

As our 21 Day fast wraps up make sure to raise your expectation of the rewards of God. Remember, because you’ve been seeking God and putting Him first, the rewards will follow.

Meditate on these verses: Hebrews 11:1-6, Matthew 6:31-33, Matthew 6:16-18
